1. How come the Insomniacs are not active anymore?

Firstly, it has become really difficult to promote parties in France. Mostly because of the French government, who is trying to “kill” the entire electronic movement. Lots of bars and clubs just had to close down, because they had an electronic programming (which is totally revolting!). Secondly, it’s almost impossible to organize and promote parties in France with good conditions. Then we decided to stop organizing parties. The good new is that the Insomniacs association is not completely dead, because we are thinking about creating an Insomniacs label.

2. How did you come up with the name Mandragore?

At first I wanted to have a DJ name for the hardcore gigs and another DJ name for the techno gigs. Then I found this name “Mandragore” (“Mandrake” in English), which is a plant that was used for witching. It is perfect for the hardcore gigs… though I only use it for the hardcore gigs in France (with Daisy for the techno gigs). However, abroad it is “Daisy” for all the gigs.

3. Do you adjust your sound, depending on the country where you play?

I always adjust my sound, depending on the party I’m going to.

4. Why are you attracted to the hard styles of dance so much?

Because I think it fits with my mood and my personality. I’m not such an optimistic person. I have always been attracted to the extreme styles (not only in music). Moreover, I have a lot of energy inside of me and this is the only way I could find to get rid of it. In other words, hardcore is sort of an outlet to me.

5. How did you get in touch with The Third Movement?

I first contacted DJ Promo, because I was desperately looking for the Promo File 002…
Later on, I got along very well with Sebastian and Christel. They asked me to come and play on some gigs in Holland after which I joined the Third Movement booking agency/label.

6. What is your impression of the Dutch scene?

I love the Dutch scene, because all the parties I went to were perfectly organized… it is very professional indeed. Furthermore, I think that the Dutch audience is curious about new musical movements, which is a positive point as it helps hardcore to evolve.

7. What was your best gig ever? Why?

Well, Mysteryland 2003 was wonderful… Because of the audience, the weather, and the atmosphere at the Third Movement area.

8. Are you planning on focussing on one style or will you keep on playing techno as well as hardcore?

I don’t think I will ever be able to quit one of these two styles. In my opinion, spinning techno is totally different from spinning hardcore, but both styles fit to my personality and I need them both.

9. Who is your favourite DJ and why?

I don’t have a “favourite” DJ… Actually I respect many DJs for their work. Mostly DJs from these labels: Bloc46, Third Movement, Rebelscum, Ist, Acardipane Rec., Fifth Era, Ebe Company…

10. What are your ambitions as a producer?

To collaborate with many talented producers in order to learn as much as possible.

11. How do you think hardcore will evolve in the near future?

Considering the evolution of computers / software, I think that we will always have many different ways of making hardcore. To me, the most interesting evolution is to go deeper into the crossovers between techno & hardcore, industrial & hardcore and break & hardcore…

12. What would be the ultimate party for you? (line up, location, music)

Well… I think that the ultimate party would be located on an island in the Pacific Ocean. There would be two floors. The first one with all the DJs who have had an influence in the evolution of the electronic movement and the second one with all my DJ friends…

DJ Daisy is sinds kort gelieerd aan The Third Movement, het succesvolle hardcore label dat zelfs in tijden van muzikale rampspoed een nauwelijks te bedwingen drang naar succes tentoonspreidt. Oprichter Sebastian Hoff (DJ Promo) is de spin in het Third Movement web; eigenwijs, zelfbewust en een geheel eigen kijk op (de toekomst van) harde stijlen binnen de dance. Eén van de nieuwe gezichten van het label is DJ Daisy, een wolf in schaapskleren, want achter haar elegante verschijning gaat een donker, niets ontziend muzikaal monster schuil, getuige haar nieuwe mix-CD op TTM r_AW ESSENTIAL .01. DJBroadcast was nieuwsgierig naar het muzikale verhaal achter deze Française en nam haar het volgende interview af.

1. Tot 2003 was je actief als promotor/DJ van de Franse organisatie Les Insomniacs. Hoe komt het dat jullie activiteiten zijn gestaakt?

Het is op dit moment ontzettend moeilijk om feesten te organiseren in Frankrijk. Vooral ‘dankzij’ de Franse regering, die vast van plan lijkt de gehele beweging van de electronische muziek de nek om te draaien. Daarbij zijn de omstandigheden om in Frankrijk feesten te organiseren vaak erbarmelijk, dus zijn we uiteindelijk gestopt met het promoten van feesten. Het goede nieuws is dat Les Insomniacs als organisatie niet helemaal is verdwenen. We zijn zelfs van plan een eigen label te beginnen!

2. Je producties komen uit onder de naam Mandragore. Hoe kwam je aan die naam?

Ik wilde twee namen voor mijn DJ-werk; één voor de hardcore en een andere voor mijn techno gigs. Toen kwam ik op de naam Mandragore (mandrake in het Engels). Dat is een plant die wordt gebruikt bij hekserij, de perfecte hardcore alias voor mij. Ik gebruik voor het draaien echter alleen in Frankrijk de beide namen apart. In het buitenland ben ik DJ Daisy voor zowel techno als hardcore.

3. Wat trekt je zo aan in de harde dance-stijlen?

Ik denk dat donkere techno en hardcore het best bij mijn persoonlijkheid passen. Ik ben van nature niet zo’n optimistisch ingesteld persoon. Ik heb me altijd aangetrokken gevoeld tot extreme stijlen en niet alleen in de muziek…Daarbij heb ik een overdosis energie in me en die kan ik alleen ontladen via de muziek.

4. Hoe ben je bij The Third Movement terecht gekomen?

In het begin heb ik contact gezocht met DJ Promo, omdat ik wanhopig op zoek was naar Promo File 002. Vervolgens bleek het heel goed te klikken met Sebastian en zijn vriendin. Ze vroegen me een paar keer om op verschillende plaatsen in Nederland te komen draaien en nu werk ik op een vaste basis voor het label en boekingskantoor.

5. Wat is je indruk van de Nederlandse scene?

Ik houd veel van de Nederlandse dance-scene, omdat alle feesten waarop ik heb gedraaid perfect waren georganiseerd, heel professioneel. Verder staat het publiek hier open voor nieuwe stromingen binnen de dance, waardoor de hardcore hier echt de kans krijgt tot bloei te komen. Mijn beste gig ooit was, niet geheel toevallig, in Nederland op Mysteryland 2003. Het publiek, het weer en de sfeer bij de Third Movement area, alles was geweldig!

6. Ben je van plan je meer op één stijl te richten of blijf je zowel hardcore als techno draaien?

Het is voor mij onmogelijk om één van deze stijlen te laten vallen. Techno is voor mij totaal anders dan hardcore, maar zoals ik al zei passen beide stijlen goed bij mijn karakter en ik heb ze allebei hard nodig.

7. Wat zijn je ambities als producer?

Ik wil graag met zoveel mogelijk getalenteerde producers werken, zodat ik mezelf kan blijven ontwikkelen. Als je ziet hoe de digitale techniek zich ontwikkelt denk ik dat er nog behoorlijk wat rek zit in de manier waarop hardcore in de toekomst zal worden geproduceerd. De meest interessante ontwikkeling van dit moment vind ik de crossovers techno-hardcore, industrial-hardcore en breaks-hardcore. Ik heb de behoefte om daar flink mee aan de gang te gaan!
